This last Monday 26 September 2022, Cam Cavitt came and visited the Alcona County Republicans in Lincoln Michigan. He is the only conservative running with a chance to beat the Democrat candidate… who, quite simply, must not win.
Here’s a quick run-down of what he had to say and our observations:
Cam’s Qualifications
Cam quickly went over what he has been up to in his business life, and along his political journey. Here’s a few of them:
- Has been a political activist since 2004
- Has been a precinct delegate
- Was Chairman, Vice Chairman, Secretary, and Treasurer of his local Cheboygan County GOP Committee
- Was recently a Trump endorsed Delegate to the National Committee
- Is a County Drain Commissioner for Cheboygan County
- Cam is also a businessman who has worked in real estate for almost 20 years.
Cam’s Goals & Positions on Key Issues
Cavitt was quite clear on his pro-life stance. He stated a belief that abortion should only be allowed when the life of the mother is in danger. He was emphatic in his statement placing the highest value on both his faith and his family, and they are both a big reason for his efforts to get elected. His stated #1 priority if he were to be elected would be to improve the infrastructure in Northern Michigan. He believes that it is inexcusable to have such limited availability for broadband & cellular services in our rural areas.
Election Integrity & Affordable Energy
He also mentioned the importance of election integrity, the integral nature of line 5 being improved to protect the great lakes and to maintain a level of affordability in energy costs to his potential Northern Michigan constituents.
Why visit the ACR?
His stated goal in visiting the Alcona County Republicans was to build a relationship with our local party, and it’s leadership. He did not shy away from the fact that in the primary, he did not have the support of the local GOP. But, the author of this article finds his effort to reach out and get to know the locals in Alcona despite this… commendable.
No stranger to corruption
It is also notable that he did not shy away from his past involvement with one very corrupt member of Michigan’s current legislative branch in one Lee Chatfield. Cam brought it up on his own accord and acknowledged the mistake. While his involvement wasn’t direct (more on the fundraising end from what we can tell), it was good to see that he wasn’t hiding from it.
Our take:
To be fair: Given the pervasive nature of corruption and political rot in Michigan (in both parties), it is rather difficult to avoid dealing with corrupt individuals. So, being involved with any of Michigan’s “political class” in the last half century or more – meant you were likely dealing with proverbial wolves in sheep’s clothing – whether you were knowingly doing so or not.
It is what it is. If Cam represented himself honestly, this past experience would hopefully provide an insider’s type knowledge and/or wisdom to combat this. As a stated man of God and family man, hopefully he will fight for what is right.
Given the state of affairs here, we have little choice but to give him a chance to prove himself, and his facing it head on in front of the ACR members & visitors, was a good start.
We recommend…
Whether you love Cam or are sitting on the fence, we HIGHLY recommend trying to build a working relationship you are able to with him. Cam was a highly approachable candidate and was welcoming and friendly. Not all political candidates are, in our experience. Use this to your advantage! Getting to know your direct representative in Lansing is fundamental and will help you decide whether or not we re-elect him next time around.
It is much more difficult to hold someone accountable, if you have no relationship with them.
